A cataract is clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. It is common after the age of 50 and is the most frequent cause of treatable blindness in India.
Signs
- Blurred or foggy vision that slowly gets worse
- Glare from lights and difficulty seeing at night
- Colours look faded; spectacle power changes often
Treatment
Medicines and drops cannot remove a cataract. The cloudy lens is replaced by a clear artificial lens (IOL) in a short operation. At the N. R. Doshi Eye Hospital cataract surgery is free; premium lenses are available at a concession rate.
