Preparing for cataract surgery

What to do in the days before your operation

Cataract surgery is a short, safe operation. Good preparation helps you recover quickly.

Before the day

  • Come for the check-up and tests the doctor asks for (blood sugar, blood pressure and eye measurements).
  • Tell the doctor about all your medicines, especially for diabetes, blood pressure or blood thinning.
  • Keep blood sugar and blood pressure under control. The operation may be postponed if they are too high.
  • Use the eye drops you are given exactly as advised.

On the day

  • Take a bath and wash your face and hair. Do not apply kajal, oil or cream around the eyes.
  • Take your regular medicines unless the doctor told you otherwise.
  • Eat a light meal unless you are told to come fasting.
  • Bring your case papers, reports, medicines and one family member.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes.

Questions & answers

No. The eye is numbed with drops or an injection, so you feel little or no pain. You stay awake and the operation usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Usually yes. Bring all your medicines and tell the doctor. Blood thinning medicines may need to be stopped for a few days only if the doctor says so.
